The first powered aircraft ever raced at Salzburg-Aigen's new track in 1910. The Munich–Salzburg–Bad Reichenhall route, operated by Deutsche Luft Hansa, took flight in 1926. The Vienna–Salzburg–Innsbruck (V-S-I) route was established in 1927.

Lufthansa, which competed with Sabena on the London–Brussels–Frankfurt–Munich–Vienna route, was involved in an earlier incident that resulted in a forced landing in Salzburg. The summer timetable of 1939 featured the debut of two new routes: Berlin–Prague–Salzburg–Venice and Munich–Salzburg–Klagenfurt–Ljubljana–Rijeka.

The Messerschmitt Me 262 fighter plane first emerged in the autumn of 1944.
